Martha Gorris: My new novel, The Echo of Whispers, Book 2 in the War of Whispers Trilogy is being launched on Sunday, Nov. 2 at His Dwelling Place Ministries. This is a victorious story dealing with healing from rejection and abandonment.

Brett Burner
Brett Burner

Brett Burner: I have just launched a new kickstarter for my 1200+ page Graphic Novel series HAND OF THE MORNINGSTAR. This project is very near and dear to my heart, and is the culmination of nearly 10 years of hard work. This series was originally co-published with Zondervan, and I am finally receiving my rights back. I’ve gotten amazing responses on this story, and it has received noteworthy acclaim of having surpassed the boundaries of story and art quality we often long for in the Christian Market.

Jerry Jenkins Shuts Christian Writers Guild. (Note: This is NOT affiliated with the San Diego Christian Writers Guild). The Christian Writers Guild, owned by novelist Jerry Jenkins, has shut down after 50 years of operation. Jenkins, who purchased the group in 2001, announced the closing at the CWG website, citing no reason but noting that students would be able to finish writing courses offered through the guild, begun as a correspondence course in the 1960s.

Martha Pope Gorris, War of Whispers; Eric Metaxas, Bonhoeffer – Pastor, Martyer, Prophet, Spy; David Wiedemer, Robert A. Wiedemer, Cindy Spitzer, Aftershock; Jack Cavanaugh, The Colonists; Kamal Saleem with Lynn Vincent, The Blood of Lambs; and Craig Alexander, The Nineveh Project.

A delightful memoir has just been released by local author Jennifer Coburn, titled We’ll Always Have Paris. The story is a hilariously written tale of various European trips taken by the author and her young daughter. Driven by a fear of dying young, Coburn and daughter make classic tourist mistakes and when they gain confidence enough to travel at their own pace, build a relationship that brings never-to-be-forgotten appreciation and understanding – and forgiveness. The book reflects Coburn’s fears and slowly and inevitably tells her own story of dealing with a father who died when she was young. It is brilliantly written and you don’t even realize you’re crying through the laughter. Available at Barnes & Noble and online. My book club at Journey Community Church recently read the 2007 book Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust by Imaculee Illibagiza. Late to the party, we nonetheless relived the horrifying experience of ethnic massacre that is still reverberating throughout Rwanda. The author has written subsequent books on similar topics. Inspiring book of survival by faith. If you are tired of the Christian books based on the “Let’s Pretend We’re Perfect” mode, The Beauty of Broken: My Life and Likely Yours, Too by Elise Morgan holds a mirror to her real life, versus the flawless family illusion she tried to maintain for many years. Gutsy and honest, this book can free you from a Stepford Christian Wives identity in case you’ve fallen into that judgmental trap.

I’m reading David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcolm Gladwell and The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference. Writing this book reportedly brought author Malcolm Gladwell back to his faith. I’m also reading The Great Santini by Pat Conroy, and recently finished A Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner and Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. All excellent!

Just finished The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion, by Jonathan Haidt. I liked this book! Haidt’s a self-described, left-leaning liberal, but in my opinion he’s one of the good ones in that he’s willing to think for himself and isn’t afraid to be as critical of the left as he is of the right. The book is based on years of his own research as a social psychologist, is peppered throughout with end notes which are as interesting as the book itself, and is extremely well-documented. Anyone interested in why our society is so polarized but who may not have time to read the book, you’ll find Haidt on TED, or go to his website at http://righteousmind.com.

On the recommendation of a friend I just finished A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. They said it was an interesting and easy read. I found it boring, tedious, confusing and difficult but I was determined to slug through it. They kept asking me how I liked it. About half way through I realized I’d ordered A Short History of the World by Blainey instead of Bryson’s book! LOL. Mystery solved and after reading Bryson I may not agree with everything he wrote but agree that it was written in an easy and entertaining style! I also read Think of a Number (mystery) by John Verdon. What impressed me about this book was the extensive vocabulary list I built from looking up words I didn’t know. I also finished Master the SAT (along with all the sample problems and practice tests). Great way to humble yourself in front of your teenagers and learn something along the way!
